The great thing about stamps is that you not only get the satisfaction of browsing through the cultures and the history of the origins of these stamps, but you also stand to gain financially as the value of these stamps increase along with age.

Stamp values unluckily have no hard and fast rules. It is not possible to say that stamps of a certain period are worth a good deal and some other stamps are of no value. None can even say that un-used or mint stamps are all the time worth more than those which have been used.

There is always a slight chance that you will slug it rich with a rare find and most stamps circulating today are worth about a dollar or less. Stamp values are partly determined by variations in color, perforation, and engraving as well as its condition and how it was printed.

The best advice to give is to exhort that no old letters or postcards and stamp collection be thrown away until someone who is knowledgeable of stamps sees the material. Because not so many people are well-informed with stamps, there are many known instances where real philatelic treasures are lost because they just get rid of old business or personal correspondence.

There are hundreds or perhaps thousands of rare old envelopes hidden in various places all over the country. There are too many instances where stamps are torn and peeled off from envelopes which would possibly have exceptional value and are just given away.

Reasonably, hundreds and thousands of the rare Postmaster’s Provisionals of 1845 to 1847 were sold and used; yet, relatively few of these have turned up in a century and they have catalogue values ranging from $32 to $15,000.

Some designs that are fairly common have variations which make them quite rare that is why no listing can be made of stamps to look out for.

It is fairly safe to assume that they are less are becoming to have value to collectors since certain values were normally used on postage in later years.
